Subject: Introductory Letter

Dear Professor Somrita,

My name is Nicole, and I am writing to formally introduce myself to you. I am a current freshman undertaking studies, majoring in Civil Engineering. Prior to my enrolment, I graduated from Singapore Polytechnic with a relevant diploma, in Civil Engineering with Business. As a student, I was exposed to the broad industry that is civil engineering, and unconsciously gravitated towards it. What intrigued me was the process of construction, and the different criteria that needed to be met before it could take place. This was one of the reasons why I continued to pursue Civil Engineering, as it felt like there was always something new to uncover while learning.

Having worked part-time in a tourism industry, my communication strength is being able to listen and effectively convey my thoughts to others. There were instances that tourists would have grievances, and it was important that I listened before replying. When they were interrupted mid-speech, there was an adverse effect in contrast to allow them to fully convey their messages. Hence I was able to learn from experience that listening is crucial to effective communication, thus strengthening my communication skills.

While being able to listen and convey thoughts coherently, my weakness is public speaking. Despite being able to speak to various strangers, addressing a crowd plagues me. Impromptu speeches are most challenging for me, as I usually take time to gather my thoughts. In such situations, I find myself repeating points that would have already been made. It reflects on me as disorganised, which causes me to dread public speaking when required.

Through this module, I aim to gain the confidence to speak comfortably in any impromptu situation, and carry out presentations with lesser hiccups. Another goal I would like to achieve in this module is to be a more active learner, to kick the passive learning habit and be a better student as a whole.

Thank you for taking the time to read my letter, and I look forward to the things I am to learn in this module.

Regards

Nicole Siew

  1. Hi Nicole,

Love what you have written, your introduction letter was such a pleasant read.Thank you for sharing your reflection of yourself. I respect your passion and drive toward construction industry as you had chosen the same field of course for your polytechnic and university course.

It seems that your strength is my weakness and vice versa, I hope that through this module as well as throughout our university life. We would be able to teach each other on our strength so that we both can improve in communication.

Overall, your letter was nicely written and impressive. I am glad that I was able to understand you better and hope that you are able to achieve your goal that you wish to achieve in this module.

    Cheers,
    Catalina

  2. Hi Nicole,

Well-written letter! Your strengths and weaknesses are detailed where your experiences definitely give depth.

Just like Catalina has mentioned, my strength and weakness are exactly the opposite of yours. Is it coincidence? Maybe! I hope that the three of us are able to learn from each other and be better communicators upon completion of this module.

    Warmest regards,
    Arsyad

  4. Dear Nicole,

Thanks for writing this letter. I enjoyed reading your letter. There are few issues to consider regarding language use. Below are my suggestions:

Strive for better clarity: Pay Attention to Sentence Construction

  5. Hi Nicole,

I enjoyed reading your letter. It was well written and pleasant to read. The letter was well structured and the flow of the letter was smooth to read. Perhaps some of the sentences could be shortened so that it won't be too lengthy. Overall, I really like reading your letter. I was able to know you better through your self introduction. I hope by the end of this module you will gain more confidence and overcome your weakness.

    See you in class!
